The Golden Lion is a traditional village pub and restaurant situated in the heart of Magor, Monmouthshire, midway between Newport and Chepstow. We are situated in the Village Square and as such, play an important role in the life of the village and its inhabitants. The Square is also home to St Mary's Parish Church, the Baptist Chapel, The Post Office, Chemist, Wine Cellar, Florist, Charity Shop and a selection of Take-Away Restaurants and Estate Agents.

The Golden Lion outside The Golden Lion! The Golden Lion is owned & operated by Julie & James Dawson who took over the pub in October 2008 and have spent the past year renovating the business, the building and gardens. Whilst retaining the village pub ambience they have also now introduced a premium dining restaurant, complete with an award winning chef.

Whilst Julie is a Newport girl (and first visited the Golden Lion in her late teens in the 1980s), James is a fellow Celt from Stirling in Scotland, so you will be sure of a warm welcome.

The Golden Lion is a classic old village pub dating to (c)1600. There are very few records available shedding light on its true history, but as it is returned to its former glory it is hoped that more details will be unearthed. The proximity of Magor to the M4, makes it an ideal "stop off" on a long journey, especially for those travellers looking for a little more comfort that a motorway services can offer.

"We feel passionately about the need to retain the traditional village pubs, along with their values and standards. Far too many pubs are closing or being turned into catefeteria style operations. We operate and manage the day to day running of the pub ourselves, ably assisted by a team of dedicated staff. Our aim is to ensure that all of our customers are able to enjoy a pleasant visit to The Golden Lion and also to ensure that our staff are able to work in a confortable and happy environment. The Golden Lion, being a typical Village Pub has to cater for many varying customers, with a very busy Public Bar, Comfortably, yet bustling Lounge Bar, separate Restaurant and at the moment a regularly packed Patio and Garden Area, complete with Children's Play Equipment. Keeping everyone happy isn't always easy, with such a diverse range in clientele, but common decency, manners and respect for fellow customers prevail!"
